Company History

The S.A. Healy Company ("Healy") has over 75 years of experience in the heavy construction industry. The Illinois-based general contractor was founded in 1923 by Stephen A. Healy, a self-starter that learned the business by working his way up from his beginnings as a miner on a tunnel project. He quickly learned the nuts and bolts of construction work, developing an uncanny ability to accurately forecast time and cost to perform construction work.

Stephen Healy built the company into a diversified general contractor that has constructed countless bridges, dams, sewers, and water treatment plants around the country. However, Healy specializes in underground construction, having excavated numerous tunnels and constructed many shafts, pipelines and underground structures. These projects include tunnels mined through mountains as well as underwater, busy streets and city buildings, overcoming the full spectrum of geologic conditions.

Stephen Healy ran the company himself until his later years, turning the reins of the company over to his sons, Mike and Tom, in 1968. Following the passing of the sons in1980 and 1981, respectively, Mr. Don Zeier, Healy President from 1974 to 1987, sold the company. In 1982, Healy was purchased by, and remains a wholly-owned subsidiary of, Impregilo S.p.A. of Milan, Italy. Impregilo was founded in 1959 , and the present company is the result of a 1990 merger with Cogefar-Impresit S.p.A., Girola S.p.A. and Lodigiani S.p.A., each of which was a major, successful player in the international construction arena. Since 1982, most of the work performed in the U.S. by Impregilo has been through S.A. Healy Company.

Impregilo's experience ranges from the construction of dams and hydroelectric schemes to roads and motorways; railways and subways; ports and marine works; hydraulic structures and irrigation projects; airports; underground works; civil engineering works for thermal and nuclear power stations; residential, manafement, sports, and industrial buildings; hospitals; and works for protection of the environment and restoration of historic buildings. According to Engineering News Record's most recent list of top international contractors, Impregilo is ranked number 31 in the world. Impregilo annual revenue is nearly $3 billion, with a backlog now approaching $14 billion.

Impregilo is also an innovative company in the area of alternate project delivery and financing schemes such as design-build and B.O.T. (build-operate-transfer). Impregilo is currently involved in 26 B.O.T projects valued at over $4 billion, as well as many design/build projects.
